Korea earn second straight victory with 3-1 upset of Germany

Hwaseong, Korea, August 2, 2014 – Korea recorded its second win in Pool B, beating Germany 3-1 (21-25, 25-20, 25-22, 25-21) at the Intercontinental Round of the FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix at the Hwaseong Sports Complex on Saturday.

Key Points

· Win improved Korean win-record against Germany to seven.

· Kim Yeon-Koung had another top-scoring performance with 25 points.

· Although Kim had an exemplary performance, young attacker Lee Jaeyong shared the limelight with Korean star Kim as she charted 18 points in another winning quest.

· All of Jaeyong’s 18 points came from attacks.

Germany had a shaky start as they committed some service errors in the opening set, while the Bae Yoona and Kim Yeon-Koung unleashed powerful service aces. German middle Christiane Furst and Heike Beier’s strong plays brought back their team in the lead by the first technical timeout. Korea tried to chase the German lead but felt short as the German block dominated the Korean attack. Germany kept the lead until they clinched the first set win 25-21.

Germany built another lead early in the second set as Maren Brinker struck aces on the Korean court. Kim Yeon-Koung and young player Lee Jaeyong combined forces to destroy the German defence and became successful. Germany faltered in this new Korean tactic and eventually lost the lead to their opponents. As Kim Yeon-Koung attacked in every position and angle, and young Jaeyong exploiting the lack of defence of the Germans from the left flank, their middle blocker Kim Heejin stayed on the service line until Germany finally succumbed to the Korean attack barge 25-20.

Germany continued to struggle on their reception, which further affected their attack plays. Kim Yeon-Koung and Kim Heejin showed depth in their game, playing excellent defence on the German attackers, while team-mate Jaeyong unleashed another series of attacks to secure victory in the third set 25-22.

Korea and Germany closely fought in the first set, resulting to tied-rallies. After the last rally, Kim Yeon-Koung broke the tie and gave a two-point cushion from her attacks on the left and right flanks. German player Margareta Kozuch stumbled on attack errors that further increased the Korean lead. Although Korea made some last minute points, it was not enough to overcome Korea in the fourth set 25-21.
