Canaries complete title double in Japan

Brazil completed a 2005 golden double in Japan on Sunday by adding the World Grand Champions Cup to the World Grand Prix title they won at Sendai in July.

The Canaries ended their Champions Cup campaign with a perfect 5-0 win-loss record by defeating Korea 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-20) at Nagoya Rainbow Hall. Victory clinched the first prize of US$300,000.

Brazil began the match like they wanted it to end quickly, storming into a 3-0 lead to force an early Korea TO, and ahead by five at the first TTO.

Fabiana Claudino has been a rock for Brazil all tournament at the centre of the net, and this match was no exception. Offensively, though, the Brazilian attack was not its smooth, incisive self, and, with the aid of some athletic Korean defence, the Asians fought back to trail by just three, 16-13, at the second TTO.

On their first set point, Jaqueline Carvalho closed it out 25-19 with a screamer down the left sideline.

In the second set, Brazil sent on power spiker Renata "Renatinha" Colombo to try and break down the agile Korean defence, and MVP candidate Welissa "Sassa" Gonzaga continued to blaze away to keep the scoreboard ticking over. On their second set point, Fabiana popped up on the right to slam down the winner, 25-18.

The Koreans, who had shocked European champions Poland 3-2 the previous day, found the Brazilians a tougher nut to crack altogether, and could not lift themselves to the challenge.

The Koreans had to survive off scraps, finding clean spikes hard to come by, but occasionally the precocious Kim Yeon-Koung gave everyone a reminder of her latent talent. At the net, Jung Dae-Young battled hard, and Ji Jung-Hee was quick to pounce on any loose balls.

But Brazil were always in control. Carvalho had not started the tournament in peak form, but ended it impressively with some timely kills as Brazil came home 25-20 with a Sheilla Castro winner on the right.
